The primary mandate of Grameen Telecom (GTC) is to promote development of tele-communication services in rural areas of the country with a view to reducing poverty by creating new opportunities for income generation through self-employment with access to modern information and communication based technologies.
As one of the shareholders of the country's leading mobile operator the “Grameenphone”, owning 34.20% shares, the company came into existence in the year 1995 as an association not-for-profit and a company limited by guarantee. Under the chairmanship of Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the company has a strong eight members Board comprising of individuals having extensive knowledge and exposure in different fields of activities.
