Bangladesh has evolved in a new era of great opportunity in the field of information and technology. Previously this field had been limited only to the major cities of the county. As a result 95% of the people had been deprived from this privilege. Therefore Grameen Telecom has come forward to help these underprivileged people in rural areas with the aim to give them a brighter future. Grameen Telecom has ventured a pilot operation known as the CIC ( Community Information Center ) with the support of Grameen Phone's network by EDGE/GPRS service. By using this facility the customers do not have to face the hazard of getting cable connection. They simply require using their sim cards from specific mobile operators to get internet connection.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

Connection Of CIC

Customer Selection:

In order to run the CIC effectively GTC will select three to four customers. Prospectus CIC operators must have a minimum standard of education. The following education level is required:

  • Prospectus operators must attain a minimum of high school degree or any such equivalent degree.
  • These operators may only own CIC in their local areas.
  • They should have minimum computer knowledge.
  • If the operator is a member of the Grameen bank he/she will get especial privilege. These members will be able to buy computers and other necessary tools by taking loan from Grameen Bank.

Bill Collection Method:

Every month CIC/GIK operators will receive a copy of the bill from Grameen Telecom. The members may pay their bills weekly directly to GTC or through Grammen Bank. CIC operators are bound to pay the required bill every month.

GTC's Services:

Before starting the business:

 

GTC will provide all the technical information required for the CIC operators to run their business successfully.
Experienced trainers will provide high quality training on equipment and software being used at CIC.
GTC will enable sim card Edge facility.
The sim card will be installed in the modem. This will help to provide internet connection.
For a fruitful and a flourishing business helpful advices will be given on suitable place for establishing CIC.
Poster, signboards, banners etc will be provided for advertisement.

After starting the business:

Afterwards if the CIC operators face any problem they may contact their local Grameen telecom unit officers.
Grameen Telecom is preparing a website on CIC (CIC portal). On this website CIC operators will get all information related to CIC, daily news, hotlink on information of various schools, college and institutes, hotlink of weather forecast and various farming updates, job sites etc.
If the CIC operators purchase necessary equipments from any Grameen affiliated shops then GTC will help the customers to receive services if the face any hardware problems.
GTC will provide anti virus updates.
From time to time GTC will warn the CIC operators about new and harmful viruses with the help of the CIC portal.

Beside this GTC will provide three other services:

i. Online chat, email, voice chat will be supported.

ii. GTC's local unit office will directly support these facilities.

iii. Customers will get internet service through telephone and mobile.

If CIC/GIK unit officers face any problem they may contact their local Grameen Telecom unit officers. For further information they may contact the head office. The working hours are from 9:00 am till 5:00 pm.

In 2006 Grameen Telecom (GTC) and Grameen Phone (GP), jointly established on a pilot basis , a number of Community Information Centers (CIC) in 16 village locations to create access to information for the rural poor people.
